Why women in red dresses turn men on

American and Austrian psychologists have conducted an experiment that explains why men find women dressed in red more "sexy".

Ladies, if you want a man to find you attractive, there is a simple solution: dress in red. This is the surprising conclusion reached by two American psychologists, Adam Pazda and Andrew Elliot, from the University of Rochester, who drew up a study protocol with their colleague from the University of Innsbruck (Austria), Professor Tobias Greitemeyer.

By subjecting 96 men to a battery of photos of women wearing clothes of different colors, the researchers found that women in red were consistently found to be more attractive than when they wore the same clothes but in a different color.

Greater sexual availability

One explanation may also be that women in red were considered more sexually receptive. Perhaps they are!? This is a possibility that researchers are not ruling out based on other studies they are currently conducting.

The idea that men find women in red look sexier had been put forward by Andrew Elliot and Daniela Nesta (also from the University of Rochester) in 2008, but Pazda and her colleagues wanted to test the explanation that this effect could be due to the perception of greater sexual availability of women in red.

"That's exactly what we found," Adam Pazda told Le Figaro, "men perceive women in red as more open and interested in sexual encounters. This perception is the key variable that explains attractiveness".

The time of the evening

Apart from color, what other discoveries have scientists made about seduction? First of all, certain physical characteristics contribute to increased attractiveness, for example, a symmetrical face or a waist-to-hip ratio close to 0.7 (the waist circumference measures 70% of the hip circumference). But there are other more contextual parameters. For example, the time of the evening.

Two American psychologists from the University of North Dakota have shown, by setting up in a student bar, that the more the evening progresses, the more attractive women see their attractiveness rating rise. Unfortunately, women deemed unattractive in the early evening have a coefficient of attractiveness that decreases as the clock ticks. These effects are not related to alcohol consumption.

According to research conducted in recent years, there are other simple ways to increase a woman's attractiveness coefficient. Dress provocatively, which will come as no surprise to anyone, but also be extroverted, honest or simply smiling.

Note that the sexy effect of red also works for men. On a scale of nine, men dressed in red gain one point in women's minds, according to work published in 2010. That year, Swedish researchers also showed that after a good night's sleep, one was judged more attractive.

How to choose your red dress

We all know the unmistakable little black dress, essential to our dressings. As for the little white dresses, their effectiveness in highlighting our sun-kissed golden silhouettes is no longer to be proven. But what about the red dress?

Red, the symbol of passion and the colour of femininity par excellence. This year the red dress takes its place on the catwalks of the little darling dresses.

Deciphering a trend for 2020: how to choose a red dress?

All the answers to your questions are in this article!

3 ways to choose a red dress?

Which color of red dress to choose?

If you don't want to make a mistake, you'll have to identify your complexion. There is nothing worse than a red that is too bright on fair skin for example. The result could be dull and not at all what you want.

So, if you feel that the red dress is not for you and doesn't suit your skin tone, you may simply not have found the shade that suits you best!

Here's how to deal with that! There are three types of skin tones: cool, neutral and warm.

Here's an easy guide to help you:

People with a cool complexion often have bluish or purple veins...

People with warm complexions have greener veins and usually tan easily without blushing.

People with neutral skin tone have discreet and clear veins.

Which red for a warm complexion?

Choose a dark red, a tomato red, a purplish red or an orange one.

Don't choose a red that is too bright, like ruby red for example.

Which red for a fresh complexion?

Choose a ruby red or a pinkish red.

Which red for a neutral complexion?

All shades of red can be matched with a neutral complexion, so treat yourself!

Which cut for my red dress?

It is important to choose a cut that fits your figure.

If you're tall, then choose a longer dress.

If you are small, avoid tight long dresses.

A V-neck is generally flattering for most body types, so opt for a V-neck if possible.

It is important to dress well according to your morphology.

And the tight red dress, do we dare or not?

If you want a sexy look, then the tight red dress is definitely THE dress for you. It's all about acceptance and personal style! Take care of your accessories so you don't overdo it and stay in a sexy but elegant touch!

The style of the dress

The red dress is not reserved for a special occasion. Exit the image of the red dress which is only seen as sexy. You can wear a little red dress for many occasions but also in casual fashion.

To wear it during the day, you can choose a basic knee-length model, a nice V-neck and three-quarter sleeves.

Don't pick something too tight or too short for a weekday. The looser and longer the dress is, the more comfortable and stylish the look will be. Also, keep in mind that the simpler the designs of your dress, the easier it will be to accessorize.

What to wear with a red dress?

Since red is already a bold colour, we often wonder about the right way to combine and accessorize it. The editorial staff will answer all your questions so that you don't make a fashion faux pas!

Which make-up with my red dress?

Don't forget that red is already a strong color, full of boldness and strength.

To highlight your dress, opt for a simple make-up.

  • eye shadow in natural colors
  • discreet mascara
  • light foundation layer

When it comes to lipstick, it all depends on the color of your dress and the occasion for which you wear it. It is sometimes a good idea to match your lipstick to the color of your dress, especially in the evening. During the day, with a floral dress or a small, light, flowing dress, you'll opt for nude tones instead.

What varnish should I wear with a red dress?

That's a good question. There is nothing worse than a varnish that spoils the elegant look of your gorgeous red dress. What colors of nail polish go well with a red dress?

  • All shades of nude
  • Pinkish beige
  • Black
  • White
  • Navy blue
  • Red, to match your dress or in an elegant shade

The varnish tints to be avoided are all flashy colors! No pink, green, blue etc...

Accessories

How to select accessories?

What shoes with my red dress?

For daytime wear, choose plain shoes without patterns, such as metallic, silver or gold colors, for example.

Beware of black shoes because even if they seem like an obvious choice, they sometimes bring a touch of severity to the outfit!

For your evenings, allow yourself more eccentricity on the shoes. It's time to get out the heels if you like to be sexy.

Which jewels to wear with a red dress?

The first question to ask yourself: What jewelry color to wear with my red dress?

Again, keep it simple with gold or silver jewelry.

As we said above, the red dress is perfect for special occasions, parties, and dressy parties. But then, how to accessorize it without overdoing it?

Stick to a maximum of two accessories

Harmonize its two accessories (no silver ring with gold earrings of course)

Choose elegant jewelry and no costume jewelry.

Stay on plain jewelry tones

The dress must remain the special element of your outfit.

The 3 questions we often ask ourselves:

Can you wear a red dress for a wedding?

You are invited to a wedding and don't know what to wear?

The red dress could be a perfect option. Choosing an outfit to come to a wedding is always complicated for a woman. We often ask ourselves a lot of questions. How can you look pretty and dress nice without overdoing it? You can't arrive dressed badly, but you can't arrive with a neckline that goes all the way to the navel or a dress worthy of the Cannes Film Festival. So how do you find the right balance?

Nowadays, you can wear a red dress to a wedding, it won't shock anyone anymore. Red is elegant and it is the perfect colour for a party or cocktail party. So treat yourself and choose a style that suits you. Always be careful not to over-accessorize and over-play.

If red is too much for you and you don't dare to take the plunge, then opt for a nice coral or a burgundy which is a very good option.

How to wear a red dress in winter?

Wearing a red dress in winter is possible. A pair of black, slightly opaque tights or fancy plumetti tights and a perfecto or black jacket will do the trick! Don't hesitate to combine it with black boots!
